At TR Group, we believe in the power of hands-on learning and the importance of nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals. That’s why we were excited to host a site tour for the rangatahi (youth) participating in the Get Ready Work Ready Programme, a collaboration with The Cause Collective. This initiative is designed to provide career insights and skills development, ultimately opening doors to high-skilled, well-paid jobs for Māori youth.

The partnership is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting Māori and Pacific youth in accessing career pathways in the transport industry. Through meaningful collaborations, such as this one, we aim to increase Māori participation in essential industries like transport and logistics, where skilled workers are in high demand.

A Glimpse into the World of Transport

The site visit was organized with the help of David Jenkins, a valued member of the Hanga-Aro-Rau National Industry Advisory Group (NIAG), and was led by Paul Fairs from TR Driver Training. It was an immersive, hands-on experience that gave the participants an up-close look at the variety of career opportunities within TR Group.

Our passionate kaimahi (staff) guided the rangatahi through different areas of the business, sharing their expertise and personal career stories along the way. The tour began in our refurbishment and paint and panel shop, where Mike demonstrated the meticulous care required to restore trucks before they are re-leased or sold. The participants were amazed at the skill and precision involved in every step of the process. It was an excellent example of the craftsmanship that goes into ensuring our fleet is ready for the road.

Next, Neil, the GM of Driver Training and one of TR Group’s longest-serving employees, provided an insightful overview of the business’s operational side. He explained how the logistics and administrative functions keep TR Group running smoothly and efficiently. This gave the rangatahi a broader understanding of how the transport industry operates behind the scenes.

Hands-On Experiences and Real-World Challenges

The participants also had the chance to explore our yard operations with Nate, who described it as “the backbone of TR Group.” Here, the rangatahi observed the essential tasks of grooming and washing trucks, which are vital steps in preparing vehicles for their next journey. To make the experience even more engaging, the participants were given the opportunity to try their hand at using a high-pressure washer, adding an exciting hands-on element to their visit.

To cap off the visit, we organized a friendly competition to fasten, unfasten, and coil a strop as quickly as possible. This task, which seemed simple at first, turned out to be a test of skill and speed. It gave participants a true taste of what truck drivers do on a daily basis and highlighted the importance of precision and efficiency in the job.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Throughout the visit, rangatahi completed surveys to reflect on their perceptions of the transport industry. Many noted that they had gained a deeper understanding of career paths they hadn’t previously considered. Tutors observed that seeing the workplace firsthand was incredibly impactful for the participants, and several students even expressed interest in future employment opportunities at TR Group.

The visit was a powerful reminder of the sense of community and support that defines TR Group. Our people matter ethos is something we’re incredibly proud of, and it was clear that this resonated with the rangatahi, who were inspired by the friendly, collaborative environment they experienced during the tour.

Penina Schmidt of The Cause Collective expressed her gratitude to TR Group, stating, “It was more than just a glimpse into the industry; it was a gateway to a brighter future, providing our youth with hands-on experiences and the chance to envision themselves in a thriving, essential field.”

Looking Ahead

At TR Group, we are committed to providing opportunities for young people to explore careers in transport and logistics. We are proud to have partnered with The Cause Collective to make a lasting impact on the rangatahi involved in the Get Ready Work Ready Programme. This is just one of the many ways we are working to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in the industry.

We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting Māori and Pacific youth on their journey toward fulfilling, high-skilled careers. Keep an eye on our website for future updates and opportunities to get involved in our programs!
