Sustainable Transport | Hydrogen (FCEV)
TR Group is leading the way forward in supporting and promoting alternative-fuelled trucks in New Zealand. Doing the right thing is acknowledging that TR Group has a big part to play in the adoption of low and no-emission transport technology for heavy commercial vehicles in New Zealand due to our position in the industry.
We were proud to partner with NZ Post and be the first in New Zealand to launch a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) onto our roads.
NZ Post Hyundai Xcient Hydrogen FCEV
New Zealand’s first Hydrogen FCEV is now on the road and working. It has has been deployed on commercial operations since 2023, having completed more than 125,000km, eliminating the need for an estimated 65,000 litres of diesel which represents 177 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, and purifying the air around the vehicle at the same time.
“It has been exciting to be able to enable this groundbreaking initiative by bringing fuel cell truck technology to the NZ market. This project has been made possible via forward thinking companies such as NZ Post with many more set to come on board.” - Brendan King, Group General Manager, TR Group Ltd.
Hydrogen – Fuel Cell EV (FECV)
We will take the learnings from the Hyundai Xcient with NZ Post and apply this to the additional FCEV’s that we are currently converting.
The next FCEV truck to come into our fleet is being built in Christchurch, New Zealand by GBV - (Click this link to learn more). The truck is being built on a DAF CF85 cab and chassis integrated with two Toyota Fuel Cells, as well components sourced from known suppliers around the world. It is expected that it will have a range and the capacity of an equivalent diesel powered 50 max combination.
Testing is underway with both short- and long-range tests under different loads and conditions to allow us to evaluate its performance and optimise the truck to work best in our environment.
Hiringa launches hydrogen refuelling network
Green hydrogen company Hiringa Energy has launched what it says is Australasia's first zero-emission green hydrogen refuelling network - Hiringa Refuelling New Zealand (HRNZ).
The initiative was officially opened by energy and transport minister Simeon Brown. With 25% of New Zealand's transport emissions coming from the heavy transport sector in spite of only making up 4% of the vehicles on the roads, this marks a groundbreaking step towards decarbonising the country's heavy transportation sector, says Hiringa.
The network has been established in partnership with New Zealand independant fuel supplier Waitomo Group, and Australasia's largest heavy vehicle fleet owner TR Group.
