TR Group’s sustainability effort is going further with tyre retreading

Tyre retread process

Protecting our environment for future generations is more important than ever. TR Group’s commitment to sustainability keeps growing as we look for new ways to make sure that the way we operate our fleet is effective while also decreasing our environmental impact.

A great, practical way of recycling comes from retreading tyres. Currently, our fleet uses approximately 9,000 retreaded tyres. To put it simply, retreading makes it possible to re-use worn tyres. Instead of dumping tyres with worn-out tread, they can be retreaded and put back to work again and again – provided a casing is looked after during its life, it can be retreaded upwards of five times.

At TR Group, our four main tyre suppliers run four different retread brands. Our very own Tyre Specialist, Mike Theyers, adds that “Having tyre suppliers who value sustainability the way we do definitely sets our fleet up for success. Many beneficial factors like reducing pollution and conserving oil go on top of recycling tyres by retreading them. This is the future of tyres! Less waste and less eyesore, while benefiting the entire industry!”

“Our rental division, for example, has used one of our tyre providers, Bridgestone, since 1992 when TR Group started. Since November 2018, this partnership alone has saved 117,999 litres of oil, 54,781 kgs of rubber, and 36,345 kgs of CO2.  Moreover, since tyre dumps are a major source of pollution, recycling tyres by retreading them means the used tyres won’t hold water that attracts vermin that create a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It also lessens the risk of releasing toxic fumes and dense smoke into the atmosphere when ignited since tyres are highly combustible. With retreading, tyres stay on the road longer, so fewer tyres pile up in landfills or illegal dumping sites.”, Mike says.

The uptake on retreaded tyres has been great in New Zealand, with approximately 350,000 retreads produced annually nationwide. TR Group is proud to be pioneering this technology to our customers and fleet, staying true to our goal of creating a sustainable transport future today.
