Turning tyre waste into opportunity.

TR Group's Tyre Recycling Area

You may or may not be aware, but March 1st saw the introduction of New Zealand’s first national tyre recycling scheme as a solution to the millions of tyres piled in paddocks, illegally dumped, or sent to landfills in New Zealand every year.

From this month, a ‘tyre stewardship fee’ will be placed on all tyres sold in New Zealand, whether loose or on a vehicle. This fee will replace the current tyre disposal fee charged when a tyre reaches its end-of-life. In essence, it is an upfront cost to ensure tyres are disposed of responsibly when they are worn out.

Only around 40% of the tyres in New Zealand are currently recycled. This scheme aims to reduce their environmental impact further by minimising landfilling and illegal dumping and setting a target of 80% of tyres recycled within four years and over 90% by the 6th year. TR Group fully supports this initiative as part of our ongoing sustainability efforts and applauds the efforts being made to reduce the environmental impact of used tyres in New Zealand. As a business, we purchase almost 6,000 new tyres each year, so we are delighted to see a government-led scheme introduced to ensure the responsible and sustainable disposal of each of those tyres once they have finished their life on our vehicles.

The scheme covers all pneumatic and solid tyres for use on motorised vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, all-terrain vehicles, tractors, forklifts, aircraft, and off-road vehicles. For any of these tyres replaced between March 1st and September 1st, the tyre stewardship fee will be charged on the new tyres AND a disposal fee charged for the end-of-life tyre removed to cover disposal costs of tyres purchased prior to the introduction of the scheme. From September 1st, the programme comes into full effect and tyre collectors will begin collecting waste tyres, funded through this scheme. This means that the existing tyre disposal fee component will no longer be charged, only the tyre stewardship fee will be invoiced.
